Selection Procedure

WMDF makes an international program each year by selecting from all the groups that send us applications. We also program special appearances (typically one day of the festival) by approaching some groups directly, or by accepting personal recommendations.

WMDF accepts applications on a rolling basis all year-round, with a deadline of Oct 30 for attending the following year's Festival. We aim to make the final decisions on participation in December. Before contacting WMDF, we recommend reading this "Artists" section of our web site, especially the "Detailed Application Information" link below. We have also compiled a "Performers' FAQ" list of questions that we often hear, and we hope that you will help us by referring to this list before contacting us.

We look forward to receiving applications from any groups that accept our terms and conditions. In general, to be considered for the following year's event, WMDF needs to receive an application by the end of October. For applications received between November and May we can typically offer only waiting list places for the upcoming event. We encourage all those with an interest to apply as early as possible.

We receive many speculative applications each year that just send us links to online resources, such as YouTube videos. A group can immeasurably improve its chances of an invitation by instead sending us a professional package of physical materials, including video media (eg, DVD) and photographs (CD-R). We also find that paper-based publicity or fliers can help to make a strong impression of a group's potential.
