Tompuvan, Malaysia (Sabah)

A new breeze from the Land Below the Wind

Formed in Sabah, Malaysian Borneo in 2018, Tompuvan was created from a shared desire to preserve and reimagine the traditional music of Borneo for new generations. Drawing inspiration from the indigenous cultures of Sabah, known as “The Land Below the Wind,” the group blends traditional instruments, native languages, storytelling, and ceremonial rhythms with contemporary arrangements and electronic elements.

Surrounded by rainforests, mountains, rivers, and coastal communities, the members grew up immersed in the sounds and traditions of Borneo life. These influences shape performances that are both deeply rooted in cultural heritage and boldly forward-looking. Their music reflects the diversity, harmony, and spirit of Sabah while creating a bridge between tradition and modern expression.

Tompuvan’s performances combine vibrant musical energy with storytelling, visual atmosphere, and cultural expression. Whether appearing at North Borneo rainforest festivals, cultural celebrations, or international showcases, the group seeks not only to entertain but also to inspire deeper appreciation for Sabah’s living traditions.

At WMDF, Tompuvan brings the soundscape of Sabah to Japan for the first time: traditional dress and instruments, contemporary rhythm, and the living spirit of Borneo carried onto an international stage.
