Ukrainian artist, singer, bandura perfomer, WMDF veteran

Kateryna was born in the town of Prypiat in Ukraine. From childhood, she was introduced to traditional Ukrainian music through the indigenous instrument, the bandura. She first visited Japan as a 10-year-old. After formal studying of music in the Ukraine from the age of 16, she returned to Japan in 2008 to further the understanding of Ukranian culture. The bandula is a traditional Ukranian instrument that combines the appearance of a harp with the frets of a guitar. The bandula used by Katerina has over 60 strings and weighs more than 8 kilos. Her performances feature Ukranian traditional music, folk songs and popular songs, as well as Japanese songs. Kateryna is a veteran of the inaugural WMDF (2008), with repeat visits in 2010, 2019, and 2022. We warmly welcome her back this year, where her music will once again brings worlds together.

A friendship fusion through African rhythms & global beats

Bo Ndeko, embodying the spirit of friendship as its name suggests in Lingala, a language of the Congo, crafts a harmonious blend of pop, soul, jazz, and African rhythms. Originating from the rich cultural landscapes of Congo and Gabon, and now based in Senegal, the band symbolises a vibrant tapestry of musical diversity. Founded in Dakar in 2022 by a group of best friends, Bo Ndeko has swiftly become an emblem of cultural fusion and peaceful cooperation across diverse backgrounds.

The ensemble is dedicated to promoting the essence of “Bo Ndeko” – a deep-seated bond that transcends mere friendship to advocate for unity and sustainable development through the fusion of cultures, ideas, and musical styles. Their performances are a celebration of ethnophonic sounds, where African rhythms meet modern jazz and soul influences, creating a spectacular and transcendental experience that bridges the gap between groove and emotion.

Bo Ndeko’s journey is marked by notable appearances at international festivals such as the Togoville Jazz Festival, Festival St. Louis Jazz, and Festival Africa Fête, showcasing their global appeal and the universal language of music they speak. The group’s commitment to blending traditional and contemporary elements has garnered them accolades, including the prestigious Deutscher Rock & Pop Preis and the Beyond Music Creativity Award.

Residing in Senegal, their adoptive homeland, Bo Ndeko draws endless inspiration from its artistic vibrancy and the welcoming spirit of TERANGA. This bond with Senegal nurtures their creativity and fuels their mission to share the message of friendship, cultural diversity, and the beauty of artistic amalgamation with the world.

Embracing the ancestral pulse of South American melodies

TAKI means “song” or “melody” in the Kichua language. Project TAKI was formed by three native Ecuadorian musicians with extensive international experience and accomplishments to express the subtlety and sublimity of Andean music through their instruments and songs. This new ensemble explores the essence of Andean folk instruments through authentic ties to the cultural roots of its sound production. Their first album, “Pachamama”, is filled with the spirit of Andean music, emphasising the character of ethnic instruments and natural sound production.
