Circo de Sastre, Tokyo

Performing art stagecraft woven from music, image & motion

https://www.circodesastre.com

Circo de Sastre (仕立て屋のサーカス) is a boundary-crossing stage performance group led by musician Daiho Soga and composed of artists and creatives from diverse fields. Like a tailor carefully stitching together fabric, they craft immersive, poetic spaces where live music, costume, projection, and lighting blend into a single expressive body.

Since their debut in 2014, Circo de Sastre has captivated audiences across Japan—including at the 21st Century Museum of Contemporary Art in Kanazawa and the Kanagawa Arts Theatre—as well as abroad in France, Spain, and Indonesia. Their performances transcend conventional categories, often in collaboration with anthropologists, filmmakers, curators, publishers, and local governments.

Their latest work, Cut the Fish, will be performed at WMDF. Layered with dreamlike visual projections, this piece premiered at KYOTOPHONIE 2023 and received acclaim for its deeply moving and genre-defying impact. Expect a surreal, cinematic experience that conjures distant landscapes and stirs the memory with a beauty beyond explanation.

Saguwa, Osaka

A visual remix from one of Japan’s Gen-Z pioneers

Born in 1998, this entrepreneur and creator first rose to prominence as a YouTuber, gaining over 600,000 subscribers and strong support from Gen Z. After transitioning from online fame to business ventures, he expanded into new fields, including operating a yakiniku restaurant and serving as CEO of the apparel brand “SAVAGE CLUB.” With a unique in-house factory, the brand produces and sells clothing and lifestyle goods nationwide. Known for generating cult-like enthusiasm through real-world shops and pop-up events, his creative approach continues to attract widespread attention for its ability to turn passion and excitement into business success. For this WMDF, he contributed a new visual variation for the festival, adding his distinctive perspective to the event’s design legacy.

Zahatorte, Kyoto

There is magic in this musical trio. Seriously funny!

https://www.zahatorte.com

This acoustic trio was formed in 2002 in Kyoto by Toharu Tomaru (accordion), Uekko (guitar) and Yosuke (cello). Their more than 100 live yearly performances incorporate visual tricks and much humour, and have something for all genres of music-lover and all ages. They are already veterans of several WMDFs, including a memorable performance during a typhoon. We hope for clear skies this time.
